Jim Stoner is a mental health writer, curriculum designer, and educator with over 30 years of experience developing innovative training programs for educational and social service settings. As the founder of ALT-PsyHealth, he has created dynamic learning experiences to advance mental health education.
His career spans mental health leadership roles, including directing programs for individuals with dual diagnoses and serving adults and children. A former psychiatric specialist in the U.S. Army, Jim later transitioned into academia as a senior lecturer in English at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. His dedication to student success earned him UWM’s Student Success Award.
He holds a bachelor's degree in philosophy, a master’s degree in professional writing and liberal studies, and has completed advanced clinical mental health counseling coursework. Beyond his professional work, Jim is an accomplished artist and writer, blending creativity with his passion for mental health advocacy.
He is the author of the Mastering Borderline Personality Disorder and Mastering Bipolar Disorder workbooks, and the forthcoming Supporting a Person with a Mental Illness: A Guide For Everyone—a series of practical mental health guides—and the upcoming poetry and art collection, Iterations of the Boy. His comedian collection of poems will be published in 2026. Jim's work has been widely published, with thirty-four poems and artworks featured in twenty-one journals. A certified suicide prevention trainer, Jim has also presented at national conferences, sharing his expertise in mental wellness and the healing power of creativity.
